BLOG NEWS: BRING CHRISTMAS CHEER WITH NZ VEGETABLES
Commentary from Chef Kathryn Taylor
Christmas is a time for family and friends, and if you’re lucky enough- not about work.
Regardless of whether cooking for paying customers or friends at home, support local growers by taking advantage of the great seasonal new Zealand produce available.
The asparagus season is winding up, so make sure you eat as much as you can while it’s still around. Like the strawberry season, it is short and full of Christmas memories. Serve asparagus for Christmas breakfast with poached eggs and grilled ciabatta. Christmas lunch can include an asparagus and cheese tart, with some homemade NZ tomato relish, and grilled asparagus is a perfect accompaniment to the quintessential kiwi Christmas Bbq dinner.
Speaking of barbecues, the New Zealand sweetcorn season is starting to get into full swing. My favourite way to eat corn is grilled in the husk, on the barbecue. Pull down the husks and remove the tassels, replace the husks, tie with string and soak in water for 5-10 minutes. Remove excess water and place on hot Bbq, turning every few minutes. Season and serve. Perfect summer food.
However you enjoy your Christmas, enjoy NZ vegetables, and have a safe and happy festive season!
