Horowhenua Taste Trail Fun

Vegetables.co.nz took part in the Horowhenua Taste Trail on Saturday 25th November, which was a huge success with great weather and a steady number of people tasting produce from the Levin to Foxton area.  The taste trail showcased 8 Horowhenua food producers and a dairy farm, sharing the paddock to plate, or factory to supermarket experience with the public.

With a stand at Woodhaven Gardens, Vegetables.co.nz provided resources on nutritional information and delicious ways to use vegetables, talking with families and foodies living locally as well as further afield.  Alongside us there was a range of activities happening throughout the day with the Central branch of NZ Chefs Association running two cooking competitions followed by a demonstration.

First up were the kids, ranging in age from primary to college, who whipped up two omelettes for the judges in 45 mins.    The competitors were from three local schools - Koputaroa, Waiopehu College and Horowhenua College.  They handled the challenge of cooking in public well, even when an egg made a break for it rolling off the table and a plastic spatula got a little close to the heat!

This was followed by the adult competition with the participants needing to produce 2 identical dishes featuring Woodhaven Garden vegetables and one other Taste Trail product (protein or other item). They had one hour to prep, cook and present. All of the competitors used the time well.

Then Chef’s Helen and Ches provided a cooking demonstration to showcase two lesser known vegetables – celeriac and fennel bulb, with people lining up to taste their finished dish and learn more about the vegetables.

Whilst all this was going on Woodhaven staff took a steady stream of people on a tour of their gardens in popular trailer rides and provided tasting plates of freshly cut vegetables.  It was great to see young and old alike enjoying the locally grown produce!
