If you’ve got a published recipe that demonstrates the wonderful taste and health qualities of farm-raised venison and fresh NZ grown vegetables we’d love to hear it - and you could win $500 or more.

Deer Industry New Zealand and Vegetables.co.nz have again teamed to celebrate healthy and delicious meals containing farm-raised venison and fresh New Zealand grown vegetables.

In addition, recipes chosen for further publication win $100 for each one accepted by Deer Industry New Zealand and Vegetables.co.nz.

How to enter Entries should be submitted to innes.moffat@deernz.org, or posted to Deer Industry New Zealand, PO Box 10702, Wellington. Entries must be received by 20 July 2013.

Entrants can submit as many entries as they wish in any category.

Entries are judged by Chef Graham Brown, Deer Industry NZ Consultant Chef, and Chef Alan Brown, Senior Culinary Lecturer, AUT, and leading Food Writer Lauraine Jacobs. The announcement of the winners takes place on 31 July 2013.

Recipes must be published, either online or in-print, between 1 January and 30 June 2013.

Recipe must be accompanied by proof of publication (print or online) between 1 January and 30 June 2013

  1. It must include one of: 'farm-raised venison', 'Cervena® venison', or the name of the farm-raised venison brand, i.e. 'Woodburn', 'Silver Fern Farms'
  2. Recipe must use New Zealand grown vegetables (note: Fungi are not vegetables)
  3. Recipe must be accompanied by a 300 dpi colour image (JPEG format if emailed) of the dish with permission for Deer Industry New Zealand to publish this in any competition marketing material
  4. Entrants must specify the category (or categories) they are entering

Judging Criteria:

  • Recipe precision: Completeness and perceived ease of use.
  • Correct cooking technique and timing: e.g. if using dry heat, venison is best served rare/medium rare.
  • Flavour: Farm-raised venison has a mild but distinctive flavour – does the recipe enhance the meat flavour or detract from it?
  • Appropriate cut selection: Is the cut the correct choice for the cooking technique and dish?
  • Healthy Family Recipe: A meal for a family using the more cost effective venison items such as mince, stir-fry or dice. The serving must be in line with Ministry of Health recommended Food & Nutrition guidelines, something for the kids to get their iron and protein and half a plate of vegetables.
  • Café Style Recipe: A recipe that represents the best of NZ café culture and showcases the versatility and ease of preparation of farm raised venison and fresh New Zealand grown vegetables. A creative take on a dish that could be prepared by the chef at a café anywhere in the country.
  • Best overall recipe: In the opinion of the judges, this recipe best demonstrates the ease of preparation and delicious healthy versatility of New Zealand farm-raised venison and fresh New Zealand grown vegetables.

The Fine Print

Entrants represent that recipes submitted are their original work. By entering, entrants retain the ownership of their entries, but agree to allow Deer Industry New Zealand and Vegetables.co.nz permission to use the recipe, the image, and the name of the entrant to promote New Zealand farm raised venison and fresh New Zealand grown vegetables in New Zealand and other countries as they see fit.
