BLOG NEWS: Use fresh herbs during WASH week 11-17 March

Herbs are a great way to add flavour to dishes so try using more during WASH week.

World Action on Salt and Health (WASH) will hold its 6th World Salt Awareness Week from March 11-17, 2013.

‘Less salt, please’ will show how everybody, including chefs, can use less salt and still make great flavoured and tasty food.

Control how much salt is in prepared food: add less salt during cooking and at the table; use less salty and tastier ingredients; and add flavour by using fresh herbs and spices.

It is difficult to eat less salt when eating food prepared by other people, for example chefs in restaurants, cafés, canteens, takeaway and fast food venues. Food from these outlets can contain hidden salt and without product labels it is difficult to make a healthy choice.

It is important that the catering industry understands the importance of reducing the amount of salt added to food, as well as the long-term negative health implications of eating a high-salt diet.
