Minnie colouring in

Eating well has been promoted as an important component of Counties Manukau DHB’s ‘Be Well this Winter’ campaign.

Recently the staff held a session designed for 5-10 year olds at a Manurewa shopping mall. The session focussed on the campaign’s three components to keeping well this winter:

  • Keeping your house dry and warm
  • Eating well
  • Going to the right place for health advice.

Vegetables.co.nz provided vegetable colouring-in pages for this event. The organisers found these to be a great way of getting children involved in the session, as well as creating a talking point around how vegetables can help us stay well through the winter.

The group of 15+ children also got involved in a game called ‘Guess this Vegetable’. To win prizes they had to correctly identify the vegetable and one way they could cook or eat it. They were allowed to ask mum and dad for help with this part! The organisers found it great to see kids interested in touching and exploring vegetables they had never seen before; e.g. beetroot, purple carrots, Brussels sprouts, yams, leeks, and bok choy.

While naming some of the vegetables was difficult, the children were very good at identifying how vegetables could help keep them well, as vegetables support their immune system. Parents commented that it was good to see their children taking an interest in new vegetables and wanting to try them at home themselves.

At the end of the session Minnie and Mickey Mouse turned up and got involved in some colouring in too! All the children went away with their own height chart from vegetables.co.nz.
