Asian vegetables have been in New Zealand since the Chinese settled here in the late 1800s. Choy is the Chinese word for any leafy vegetable.

The names of the vegetables may be different depending on differing areas of China. For example bok choy is also called Chinese white cabbage, buk choy, pak choy or baak choi.
